Phil & Co., the creative marketing agency that works exclusively with nonprofits and companies doing good, has launched UnPhiltered, a new podcast delivering an insider’s unflinching look at the people, trends, issues and influences shaping the multibillion-dollar charitable giving industry.
UnPhiltered features Phil & Co. CEO Cliff Sloan in conversation with thought leaders, philanthropists, marketers and innovators. Last week, the podcast kicked off the first episode in a 3-part series focused on the 2018 Halo Award winners.
In Part 1 of the Halo Award series, Cliff talks to Dave’s Killer Bread, the #1 organic bread company in the country and recipient of the Silver Halo Award in Social Services for their vital work with people adjusting to life after incarceration. Dave Dahl, the company’s co-founder and namesake, counted on a second chance working at his family’s bakery after 15 years in prison. His own experience with the challenges of reentry inspired the company’s Second Chance Employment program, and today more than a third of Dave’s Killer Bread employees are formerly incarcerated people.
They discuss how mutually beneficial second chance employment can be and why it’s right both for social good and their business. “We want the best person. Full stop. Sometimes they have a criminal background,” says Dan Letchinger, VP Marketing at Dave’s Killer Bread. Since implementing the program, their sales have skyrocketed.
