#VotaConmigo: Univision Communications Inc.
A record number of Latinos cast ballots in the 2020 presidential election. This robust turnout may be due in part to Univision and its #VotaConmigo campaign, an effort that began in 2018 with a mission of increasing voter turnout. Through a non-partisan effort, #VotaConmigo aimed to help Latino American citizens register to vote, become educated about the voting process, obtain absentee ballots and actually participate in the election.
The campaign took a multi-pronged approach to voter turnout, creating Martes de Acción
(Action Tuesdays), partnerships with other Hispanic and voting organizations and Semana de Acción (Week of Action). It also produced and published more than 200 Animated Videos & Explainers that were publicized through virtual town halls. These efforts identified key voter registration deadlines in each state, reassured voters of the legitimacy of the vote-by-mail process, and offered information on how to register to vote, how to vote by mail, how to request and absentee ballot, and how to stay safe when voting in person.
A series of stickers and GIFs in Spanish, available on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp reached an impressive 18 million views in the first two days. QR Codes allowed viewers to access Univision’s website and voter registration tools right on their cell phones—and more than 70,000 users interacted with the tool to register to vote, request a ballot or update their registrations.
Latino celebrities such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Wilmer Valderrama, Laurie Hernandez and others, along with well-known social media influencers also participated in the #VotaConmigo effort, which was made stronger by partnerships with Voto Latino, Mi Familia Vota, Poder LatinX, Hispanic Federation, Voter National Registration Day, Early Voting Day Coalition and others.
Taking advantage of Univision’s far reach into the Latino American community, the television segments promoting the campaign reached close to 53 million viewers. More than 6,000 posts on Univision’s local and national social media platforms (averaging 54 posts per day) generated more than 43 million impressions.
In Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, Latino turnout may have been responsible for pushing Joe Biden to victory. In these key battleground states, exit polling showed that Biden won the Latino vote by an average of 70 to 30 percent over Donald Trump. Only in Florida did the Latino vote go to Trump.
