To Honor Military Families, more than 180 Projects Supporting over 19,400 Students Funded
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Teachers and students in San Diego military-connected schools have something to celebrate today as AT&T revealed it “flash funded” projects listed by teachers on the education crowd-funding site DonorsChoose.org. In total, more than 180 projects were fulfilled, benefiting over 19,400 San Diego students with a total contribution of more than $130,000.
“As part of our support of our nation’s men and women of the military, this is one way we can say thank you to those who serve and their families,” said Ken McNeely, President of AT&T California. “We are thrilled to support these students as part of our ongoing commitment to education through AT&T Aspire and to military communities. We honor those who serve on Veterans Day and all year long.”
The flash funding in San Diego is one of the 11 done across the United States in military communities. All told, AT&T is fulfilling more than 790 projects, benefiting over 83,600 students with a total gift of more than $530,000.
AT&T Aspire is the company’s signature education initiative that invests in students today – at home, in the classroom, and at work – to prepare them for success tomorrow. AT&T previously supported several DonorsChoose.org initiatives as part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s $350 million planned commitment to education.
AT&T is honored to serve those who serve. In 2013, AT&T announced that it is stepping up its veteran recruiting efforts with the goal of hiring 10,000 veterans over the next 5 years. Since making that commitment, AT&T hired more than 9,500 veterans and is well on the way to surpassing that goal.
Founded in 2000, DonorsChoose.org makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. At this nonprofit website, teachers at half of all the public schools in America have created project requests, and more than a million people have donated $265 million to projects that inspire them. All told, 12 million students—most from low-income communities, and many in disaster-stricken areas—have received books, art supplies, field trips, technology and other resources that they need to learn.
